CHAPTER 15: Baylor

Sunshine was lying next to some guy under a car.

I could see their legs sticking out, hers long, shapely and gorgeous, and his…mannish.

The two looked awfully close.

Willard came over to me. "She's teaching the new kid how to change the oil."

"Oh yeah?" I said.

"Hmm, not sure if he's acting like he doesn't know anything. But they've been under there a while."

I wanted to ask how long "a while" was.

But I also knew the old man was probably yanking my chain.

The guys in the garage liked to tease me about Junior, had been doing it for years, thinking I was interested in her as more than just a friend.

Yeah, right.

Omar, Lenny, and Dimitri came over next.

"Seaver's smarter than he looks," Omar said. "I think the kid's acting."

"Eh, he could be telling the truth. He knows next to nothing about cars," Lenny said then added, "but they do spend a lot of time together."

"They do?" I asked.

Dimitri sniffed while crossing his arms. "I've never seen her smile so much."

That made my heart pound.

"I'm much funnier than he is," he put in. "Better looking too."

"Yeah, but you're not her age, Dimitri," Willard said. "June has to spend time with us most days. Must be nice having another young person to talk to."

"They look pretty good side by side," Omar commented.

I scoffed at that. "Sunshine's beautiful. She'd look good with anyone."

"Aren't you two a thing now?"

"Yeah. Why?"

"No reason," he said, but there was clearly something he was holding back.

Dimitri didn't have that problem. "She's under there now, right next to another guy. That don't bother you?"

Dang, it shouldn't.

I knew it shouldn't.

But it did.

"It would bug me," Omar said.

"Me too," Lenny agreed.

Willard tilted his head from side to side. "Girl's gotta do her job. There could be nothing to it." I looked to him with a thankful expression, but then he added, "Or there could be, if her boyfriend's not fulfilling her needs."

The four men looked at me with their eyebrows raised, and I chafed under their gazes.

"Me and Junior are good," I said. "You guys can keep your opinions to yourself."

Laughter came from beneath the car that my girl was currently under, and the guys looked from there to me with expectant glances. I clenched my teeth, so I wouldn't say anything.

"No need to get testy," Willard said. "We're just trying to help."

"Yeah," Omar said.

"Looks like you might need it," Lenny added.

Dimitri just grinned. "Don't worry. You're like me, a ladies man. But it seems like Seaver might be as well, so…maybe worry a little."

"Ha ha, you're real funny," I said.

As more laughter came from beneath the car, he lifted a brow.

"No—but it seems like Seaver is."

I sent the man a withering look, and he held up his hands.

Sunshine and Seaver rolled out from under the car then. When she saw me, her eyes widened.

"Bay," she said, getting to her feet, "I didn't realize you were here already. I was showing Seaver how to change the oil on a sedan. Might as well learn something while he's here.
